Henry Andrew Chandler was born in Deptford on 9th September 1893 (Greenwich Q3-1893 1D:1034) baptised St Nicholas, Deptford on 29th November 1893, second son William Walter and Florence Brewer CHANDLER (née HUNT).

1901 census...Aged 7 he was at 33 Union Road, Rotherhithe with his father William W. Chandler [49] clergyman born Mill Hill, Middlesex; his mother Florence B. [39] born Herne Bay; brothers William Burgess H [14] born Kensington and John Edgar.[4] born Deptford; sisters Isabel [11] born Kensington and Florence S [9] born Rotherhithe and grandmother Mary LOWTHER [83] born Buntingford.

1911 census...Aged 17, a student, he was at the Vicarage, Cavenham with his parents, sister Florence and grandmother Mary LOWTHER.



He enlisted in Mildenhall.
123 Company were part of 41st Division. This was long before the Machine Gun Corps Battalions were formed (1918). The battle of Flers-Courcelette in September 1916 saw the capture of Flers on 15th. The infant Tank Corps (as yet still the Machine Gun Corps (Heavy)) took part. Henry's memorial plaque in the church states he took part in the Flers battle. His date of death on this plaque seems to be one day out from all service records.




Henry Chandler is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, pier /face 5C/12C
also commemorated on the Addey & Stanhope School Memorial in Deptford.
